SANTA CROSS RACERS’ LAST HURDLES BEFORE THE HOLIDAY BREAK

Bicyclists looking for something different to do, or deals, bargain hunting, sports fans – here’s your FREE ticket to The Greek!  The Who are some of the world’s best cyclists, not the band.  What’s not on second, but running, jumping, biking, racing up and down the hillsides during the “Santa Cross” Weekend.  Where is obvious, but technically The Greek is in LA’s Vermont Canyon Park, at 2700 North Vermont Avenue.  When the beginner’s clinics start at 8:30AM, then the racing won’t stop until 4PM Saturday, and Sunday.  If you have not been at an all-day Cyclocross PARTY before, you’ll love seeing “How” by being there or taking a sneak peak at videos posted at SoCalCross.org.

Before the world’s best, most elite cyclists race the coming 2013 World Championship Cyclocross events in Louisville from February 2nd to the 4th, they must win-place-or show in National Championships.  Many of the world’s elite competitors have been warming up for “The Worlds” hosted in Kentucky, by racing all over the USA.  SoCal Cross competitions have had racers from Belgium, France, Germany, Mexico and Canada, here to push their limits, acclimate to our culture, and our (less-European) style of race courses.

You’ll see knobby tires on mostly “cross” bikes going over a mostly off-road course, including sand, stairs, hills, barriers to hurdle, other obstacles, and even mud pits – nature made if we have any rain this weekend!

Santa Cross sounds like Christmas cookies taste – for guys and girls that just wanna have fun, with Kiddie and Doggie Cross races, and a Santa Cross Relay, but for the serious – it’s lung-searing!  Hundreds of cyclists from Youth to elite are racing over the two days to become the Champions of Griffith Park.  Category winners will earn the California Bear jersey made by Voler Team Apparel – then the only race left in 2012 is “CX into 2013” at Irvine Lake’s Baja Beach Club on Sunday, December 30th.

Wildly popular in Europe for decades, CycloCross has taken the US by storm and the Louisville Kentucky Worlds are only the second World Championship event in the US since 1986! “CX” is spectator-friendly bicycle racing because of its compact courses. Short, fast laps offer prime viewing, you can hear the racers gasping, panting for air as they pass an arms length away, making seemingly impossible moves up steps, over barricades, and up hills.

The Salvation Army’s not likely to be there so you can bring your own Cowbells.  SoCalCross supports the community with donations: Doggie Cross to benefit the Los Angeles Animal Shelter, Santa’s Raindeer TEAM Relay to benefit Aids Life Cycle. SoCalCross to renew its annual membership for 2013 with the Friends of Griffith Park and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. Unlikely to be singing Christmas carols either, so you can cheer until you’re horse.  Come, see a FREE show of from this tribe of self propelled, 2-wheel racers, Cyclocrossers, this week at the Greek and in two weeks at Irvine Lake as we Cross into 2013.
