SCPS 3/4: Santa Cross-itas Weekend Adventure-time!

Holiday-themed FUN! ‘Cross-Camp-Gravel-Run from Campground Grebe in Laks Casitas!

The Lake Casitas area of Ventura County is an inviting blend of wilderness and laid-back tourist destinations, all accessible by AMTRAK Pacific Surfliner trains from the San Diego, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara areas (four trains daily from the south, two daily from the north) and a short bike ride that flows along the picturesque Ventura River Rail Trail.

The Lake is surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest and privately-owned wildlands, making an inviting rustic place for a short bicycle-oriented trip out of town. The charming town of Ojai, with coffee bars and delightful restaurants, is only 7 miles away—and most of those miles can be ridden on the active transportation-only Ojai Valley Trial, one of California’s best known rail trails.

With So Cal Cross’ Crossitas cyclocross racing weekend providing a community campground basecamp (yes, showers are available on-site), this weekend at the lake is the perfect opportunity to mix easy bikepacking (safely leave all your camping gear at races’ community campground as you explore the area) built around a ride on Sulphur Mountain Road, a must-do Southern California gravel ride.

The Sulphur Mountain Gravel Bike Adventure will be approximately 35+  miles long with about 3,500 feet elevation gain. Expect about one-third dirt and the rest pavement along quiet country roads and rail trails. There will be one re-supply check-point with water and snacks. The town of Ojai is a great place to take break for lunch, leaving plenty of time to ride back to the Lake for awards and packing up before the trip home. The Gravel Ride will FUN-draise for the dedicated work of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. Three lucky winners will be awarded burrito bike pack handlebar bags!

SoCalCross returns to Costa Mesa for the Prestige Series Kick-Off SCPS 1/2: Turkey Trot Cross Weekend at Estancia-Balearic Park in Costa Mesa. With a year or more away from the sport in Southern CA, it will be nice to see people ‘crossing in the park. The course design will be similar to our first edition, but with some creative twists in the Art of Cross Design.

We are looking forward to hosting more races this season across the region leading to the Winter Finale in January 2022 as we go with the flow. We will be updating the Series events via the SCPS – SoCalCross Prestige Series Rider’s Guide. *Best finishes including the Series Final determines the Prestige Series Category Champions.

Meanwhile, here are the details for the post Thanksgiving Weekend!
