CXLA WEEKEND DAY 1: UCI CROSS AFTER DARK FINALE!

The UCI Elite Racing hosts first ever JUNIOR Men's elite race in SoCal and Cross After Dark Finale elite men and women!

Cross After Dark Series Heads to Final Race CXLA Hosts a Repeat Battle for Overall Men’s Title

The nationwide Cross After Dark cyclocross series winds up in downtown Los Angeles next Saturday after a season long battle between the top racers in the U.S.  Racers will be competing “under the lights” in the heart of Los Angeles at Los Angeles State Historic Park just north of downtown.

Racers from across the country will be competing for the $5,000 in series prizes in addition to the UCI Category 2 prize list offered for the race.  Prizes are equal for men and women with cash paid to the top 5 places.

Like last season, the men’s overall title will do down to the final race with a repeat battle between Ryan Trebon (Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld) and Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement).  Las year Trebon took the title with his final sprint-finish win over Berden.  Berden holds a slim 12-point lead over Trebon after a mechanical mishap caused a “DNF” in the Cincinnati race.

The women’s side will certainly see an overall victory by Katie Compton (Trek Cyclocross) who owned the series races in St. Louis and Cincinnati and is challenged only by Sanne Van Paassen (Rabobank-Giant) who will not be present.  Despite Compton’s dominance of the top spot and a 55-point lead, the remaining places are up for grabs.

RACING BEGINS AT 12:30PM FOR SOCALCROSS THEN UCI RACING AT 6:30PM -JUNIOR MEN, 7:30PM ELITE WOMEN AND 8:30PM ELITE MEN.

Cross After Dark kicked off at CrossVegas in Las Vegas with victories by Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) and Van Paassen.  Round two was held a week later at Gateway Cross Cup in St. Louis where Ben Berden and Katie Compton dominated their competitors.  The third stop was in Cincinnati for the Cincy3 CX Festival where Ryan Trebon and Compton captured the wins under the lights.

Cross After Dark is a series of cyclocross races held at night in top markets across the U.S.  Series sponsors are Clif Bar & Co; KNOG lights and Vermarc Sportswear.  Cross After Dark information including prize list  is available HERE

CXLA TO FOCUS ON WOMEN & JUNIORS

This event is not only about the big-name guys and gals.

Despite all you may have read, heard and seen regarding the outrageous amount of world-level racing taking place this weekend at CXLA, a high degree of attention is also being focused on women and junior riders and racers.

You probably know that CXLA features the first ever UCI Junior Men’s cyclocross event. It’s proudly sponsored by Rock n Road Cyclery and it takes place on Saturday evening at 6:30 at Los Angeles State Historic Park.

But did you know that it’s open to any young man 17-18 years old (according to the CX season calendar) with a cyclocross bike and a current UCI license? This is an opportunity of a lifetime for any aspiring bicycle racer, no matter what category or level he may be at right now. Hey all you gnarly high school league mountain bike racers out there — come on down! Don’t have a CX bike? Well, SoCalCross has rentals.

It’s not too late to get the proper licensing and get signed up for the Rock n Road UCI Junior Men event. License applications for the USA Cycling and UCI 2013 season opens Saturday morning, 12/1/12, so riders can do that online before coming to the race. There will also be race-day registration on site Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m., but participants are strongly encouraged to get the ball rolling ASAP by visiting the USA Cycling website. You’ll need either a valid birth certificate or current passport whether you’re getting this paperwork done online or in person at the park.

And even if you have no plans to race in the UCI event — or any other class, for that matter — there are lots of other cool ways to be involved during this historic weekend.

Ladies and kids will have several chances starting on Friday afternoon to meet and spin around with big-name pro riders including Tim Johnson and Ryan Trebon of the Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com team and Meredith Miller from the Cal Giant/Specialized squad.

Or how about spending some time in “the lounge”? Cardo Systems is hosting a seminar/question-and-answer/meet-the-pros session specifically for gals of all ages, and the guys get their turn with a focus on juniors thanks to Rock n Road Cyclery.

Don’t have a bike or don’t even know how to ride? Check out Sunday morning’s Steeple Cross presented by Squareone. It’s a trail run on the cyclocross course!

Finally, anyone who has attended any SoCalCross race knows there is a free, half-hour cyclocross skill clinic first thing every race morning, a Youth & First-Timers class as well as a Kiddie Cross at some point of the day — often one of the most entertaining of all.

There’s something for everyone at CXLA. Why let the big guys have all the fun? We encourage youngsters and “the fairer” side to join us this weekend and at upcoming Prestige Series events.

Be sure to check out the CXLA website for specific details and a full — and we mean FULL — weekend schedule.

This event takes place December 1-2, 2012, at Los Angeles State Historic Park and features two days of professional cyclocross competition sanctioned by UCI, the world governing body for the sport of bicycle racing.

Cardo Systems has provided CXLA Weekend the backing it needs to ensure the Elite Women’s cash prize payout to the top five finishers is equal to that of the Elite Men’s purse.

Dorothy Wong, the SoCalCross Series promoter, is elated to have Cardo Systems become involved as a believer and supporter. “In speaking with Brenda Lyons from Cardo Systems, it quickly became apparent that this would be a great partnership,” Wong stated. “The SoCalCross mission is to increase participation of women and juniors in the sport of cyclocross and in cycling for recreation and transportation in general. This fits the concept of the BK-1 very well. It’s an amazing product and great tool for riders of all levels.”

The Cardo BK-1 is a bicycle specific product that revolutionizes the cycling experience with its advanced communication innovations and entertainment features. Suitable for all cyclists, its unique Bluetooth intercom conferencing feature allows cyclists to hold a conversation at a range of up to 500 meters.

According to Lyons, the Western States Brand Representative for Cardo Systems, “We want to be involved in helping people to become more comfortable on the bike, and by creating an easier way for riders to communicate while riding. We believe that riders will feel safer on the roads and trails when they have such an easy way to communicate with others. By supporting women’s cycling and the SoCalCross Prestige Series, we are supporting the growth of the sport and also showing that we are here to enhance the ride at all levels and in all disciplines.”
