SAN DIEGO double Weekend... SPYclocross and Adams Avenue CX

Results are up on http://socalcross.org/results or can be found here:

Spyclocross (pdf)
Adams Avenue (pdf)

2 days of racing brought over 500 racers to San Diego County this weekend.  Many new faces came to play.  Many accomplished athletes from other disciplines… triathlon and moto-x.  Chris Horner was on hand to support his wife Megan.  Steve Tilford came to play as he was in town on business.  So many new faces to ‘cross it was fun to see the hecklers come out to Adams Avenue race at the velodrome while the day before the north eastern San Diego region brought almost a slightly different crowd.  SoCalCrossers came for one day or both and were treated to two diversely similar courses with more dirt than the Series has seen to date.  Cross is about the diversity and the challenge of the terrain, the technicality and the weather (no rain yet).

Saturday Ranchos Cycling, SPY-Blue hosted SPY-clocross benefiting the San Dieguito River Park in support of its bicycle trail system.  As well the SPY bridge made its appearance along with a $1,500 elite cash purse!  Sunday brought the SD cycling culture together in and around the velodrome at Balboa Park.  Adams Avenue teamed up with Celo Pacific to host the Sunday event.  Click on this link to video of velodrome start!

SoCalCross NORTH double the fun!

The Prestige Series headed North to Los Olivos and San Luis Obispo!

What a fun weekend… as things heated up literally!  The Southern California Prestige Series presented by SPY Optic brought round 6 and 7 North for a weekend double header in Los Olivos and San Luis Obispo.   Both events saw their highest attendance on record.  Racers traveled from near and far to be part of the fun representing Lake Tahoe, the PNW and Colorado… the word is getting out!  Dirt Club Cross in Los Olivos brought the flavor of the Santa Inez Valley’s MTB scene… with no trails all wide dirt sections, a tree root step up and the Shimano Stairway to ‘heaven’ or ‘hell’… one of the steepest run-ups of the Season!  And not stopping our Juniors who took on the challenge braving the big kids course including the run-up!

Sunday’s SLO Cross #1 took place at El Chorro Regional Park in San Luis Obispo.  The course was full of tight turns around trees and bunny hop sections, a power-sapping sand pit, a double barrier run up and super fast barrier section leading into the last couple of turns to the finish.  Great course design both days – Sam Sweetland at Dirt Club Cross took racers meandering to to the finish not before taking racers on a twisting adventure including a natural sand section and a couple steep drop sections. It was a weekend for good turners.

See you this weekend in San Diego County for SPY-clocross Saturday at Lake Hodges.  $1,500 elite cash purse!  Flowing donation keg benefiting the San Dieguito River Park.  Fun times by SPY hosted by Ranchos Cycling Team!  The CX cours takes place mostly on dirt tracks the course meanders on the eastern side of the Lake and treats racers to a fast challenging course with a short ‘climb’ each loop evening out power rider from the climber.  The soft sandy beach section will challenge riders skills.  The SPY bridge will make its appearance for a roller-coaster ramp inside the natural course layout.

Sunday brings us to the cliche’ SoCalCross meets Paris Roubaix as the Series heads to the heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park.  The race will start and finish at the San Diego Velodrome… this course will mix dirt trail, road and grass for a fast flying course in and around the track.  Fun times!  Saturday’s race is an American Bicycle Racing sanctioned event and Sunday a USA Cycling sanctioned event.  National ranking points on the line Sunday and Prestige Series points on the line both days.  Thanks to our presenting sponsor SPY Optic and Voler Team Apparel our official race leaders jersey will be worn by our race leaders each week.
