SoCalCross Fever Race #2 – became more than a local race to keep racers ‘crossin’ into January and cure our Cross Fever, it became the first ever Nor Cal Vs. So Cal Championship points challenge as race director, Sam Ames worked his promotional experience and passion for the sport to get the two regions to play in Bakersfield for a points competition based on performance and participation… whichever region earned the most points on the day wins. That simple. It began Saturday night with a pre-reg-party dinner where a room full of crossers from Nor Cal AND So Cal came together to get to know each other and chat about our local scenes. Fun times!
As the sport continues to grow as well as USA Cycling’s decision to move of CX National Championships next season into January 2012 as a way to help our World Championship Team be as competitive as possible, January 2011 was the perfect time to start the challenge. In the end, Southern California took the points and Celo Pacific won the trophy for bragging rights until we meet again!
The course was built on the home of many a cross race in years past, Hart Park in Bakersfield. This time Sam and the Kern Wheelmen took it a step further creating a Belgian themed race complete with beer tent and frittes! The challenging 1.7 mile course included two run ups, barriers, flowing turns in both grass and dirt and a cross-over bridge for full-effect. Approximately 200 racers came together on Sunday to participate. The vibe was awesome as we discovered that we all have, though miles apart, the same passion for the sport as well as the love of mud, heckling, beer, and being a part of our cross communities!
Elite winners in the men’s and women’s races were won by Nor Cal. Josh Snead winning a very close battle with So Cal’s Brent Prenzlow and Emily Thurston powered herself away from the competition winning in dominant fashion. Complete results coming your way shortly here at SoCalCross and CX Magazine.
