SOCALCROSS KICKS OFF 2011-12 SEASON @LOS ANGELES STATE HISTORIC PARK

Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross Presented by SPY Optic Inaugurates Race Series from San Diego to San Luis Obispo; Shimano Steps-Up as California UCI-California Gold Crown Events Sponsor

Los Angeles, Calif.—The 2011/2012 Southern California Cylcocross (SoCalCross) season kicked off Sunday, Sept, 18, 2011, in downtown Los Angeles with “DTLA Historic Park Cyclo-fest presented by Golden Saddle Cyclery”  This Prestige Series race took place at its first ever California State Park where the City of Los Angeles’ first rail car system once operated in the late 1800’s.  A recent archeological dig along the start/finish straight revealed the foundation of the Pacific Hotel built in 1879.  Now, the modern Metro Gold Line travels at Park level from Downtown LA to Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.  With so much history literally a few feet below the course, the cyclocross race seems uniquely juxtaposed against a backdrop of modern buildings of Downtown Los Angeles. The event also hosted the Arroyo Seco Foundation’s Tour de Arroyo II in support of an Arroyo Seco Bikeway and healthy transportation alternatives through the Arroyo Seco from Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles.  What an exciting day from start to finish as well over 450 competitors came to race ‘cross in LA!  Women and Juniors comprised 30% of the racers!  Despite the early calendar for many the A elite field brought a solid field including champion pro mountain bike racers Sid Taberley H20-Kenda and Allison Mann Rock N Road who won their respective fields.  SoCalCross will award 20 series champions from Under 10 to 55+ and Cat 1/2, 3, 4.   Complete story and interviews can be found at: Outside All Day.com Each week, leaders jerseys by Voler will be awarded to the Series Leaders called up as the top riders in each category throughout the season.  Overall Series prizes will be awarded at the Season Finale on 1/21-22/2012 weekend.

Southern California Cyclocross includes 22 races over 17 weekends from September 2011 to January 2012 is presented by SPY Optic.  Concurrent with its Prestige Series efforts, SoCalCross is also producing Gold Crown Events Presented by Shimano.  These marquee events include top-level international UCI races, including the Spooky Cross Weekend in Irvine, Oct. 15 and Oct.16, which is also part of the UCI Night Race Series/Cross After Dark.  Thereafter, “Cyclocross Los Angeles” (CXLA) will usher-in top-level cyclocross action and a festival at the heart of Los Angeles, Dec. 3 and Dec. 4.  The finale of the Gold Crown will be the Nor Cal- SoCal Showdown weekend as the Prestige Series Final and the California Cyclocross Championship weekend in Bakersfield.   California Gold Crown events presented by Shimano will showcase each region as more than a ‘cross race featuring eco-sport-healthy-living festivals, benefit rides along SoCal’s waterways and cross country-style runs on and arount the CX course.

“With the rapid growth of cyclocross nationally and, especially so in our region, we’ve enhanced our events this season to reflect the increased caliber of racers flocking to our events and to create a really fun experience for the broader cross-section of people and their families who have been attracted to the sport,” says Dorothy Wong, SoCalCross executive director. “Key to our raising the bar this year is SPY coming on board as Presenting Sponsor. They are a hands-on partner that makes incredible technical eyewear for cycling and has a real passion for ‘cross racing; and, as Southern California lifestyle brand, they definitely know how to bring the party in a big way wherever they go. With SPY, everyone can expect a perfect storm of good people, serious racing and not-so-serious shenanigans.”

The Prestige Series was formed in 2005 by an association of cycling clubs passionate and eager to grow the sport of cyclocross in Southern California and motivated to become a nationally-recognized series. The two-year agreement with SPY provides SoCalCross resources sufficient to triple its schedule to 22 separate events in the 2011/2012 season. Series champions will be crowned at the end of the season, Jan. 21, 2012, as part of a two-day weekend of racing in Bakersfield, Calif., with Sunday slated for an inaugural “California Cyclocross” (CACX) headliner—a Nor Cal v. So Cal showdown to determine the best racers in the State held against a backdrop of good-spirited rivalry and celebration.

“The SPY crew is excited for this relationship with Dorothy and SoCalCross,” says Michael Marckx, SPY Optic president. “As a diehard racer of the Prestige Series, I’ve enjoyed the events immensely over the years along with my 9-year-old son, which makes this so exciting, personally and professionally. In terms of the business for SPY, cyclocross is the hardest, most irreverent and most community-based facet of bicycle racing and it’s a perfect way to tell SPY’s Performance eyewear story—a category we just re-launched—complementing what we’re doing with our road racing and MTB initiatives. Plus, it supports our whole So Cal brand promise in a very cool way.”
