Bend, Ore. — Visit Bend and the organizing committee for the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships have unveiled a new national championship race course and a preliminary schedule of events for the five-day event that will take place in Bend, Oregon’s Old Mill District from December 8-12, 2010.

Similar to the national championship course from 2009, the new 2010 race course includes a staircase run-up, two barriers, and challenging technical sections. New for 2010, the championship course is approximately 500 yards longer, includes three straightaways, three off-camber sections, and a ride-over bridge that will also serve as a spectator underpass entrance to the infield and beer garden.

“The race course we’ve designed for the 2010 National Championships will be the most complete and challenging cyclo-cross course the racers have ever seen,” said Brad Ross, race director. “The new course will have similar technical challenges as the 2009 course, but now includes long straightaways and additional off-camber features that will challenge every type of rider and will definitely produce worthy national champions.”

Latest SoCalCross News!

Dot's Short Report and Race Results posted from SCPS #3:

Team Velocity hosted Round 3 of the SoCalCross Prestige Series presented by H2O Overdrive at Prado Regional Park Sunday 10.10.10. A great course laid out a nice fast start leading into a winding course through baseball and soccer fields complete with a handful of mud bogs, a couple off camber slopes and the infamous H2O Overdrive-Velocity Stairs pushed riders to the test each lap.  The Juniors came enforce as our fastest growing category in the sport (in large part to the SoCal High School MTB League). The most exciting finish of the day was the Youth Race (under 10) where these young athletes (most competitive by the way) rode one lap of the actual 1.75 mile cross course!  Brody and Ethan sprinted it out to the finish with Brody taking the win.  Both boys came over to do an interview and will work on their tactics for the next race… watch out!

Another growing field is the Masters Men 45+ renewed with their passion for this super fun sport.  National 2009 silver medalist, Bobby Langin Sr. (Platinum) took the win and was awarded the prize of the day… a pair of tubies thanks to our friends at Challenge Tires!  In the elite women’s race, MTB Champion Pua Sawicki came out to play as she gets ready for La Ruta… a grueling MTB race in Costa Rica later this year.  A great ride by Amanda Shaper (SDG) got her the number two step on the blocks and new to cross Pro MTBer, Allison Mann (Rock N Road) took 3rd.  In the elite men’s field, Sid’s barrier bunny hop skills pushed the top guys each lap as well as the 90+ degree temperatures took its toll (though it rained 3 days and 60 degrees during the week).  In the end, Sid took the win with Brandon Gritters (Rock N Road) 2nd and John Bailey (Bailey Bikes) gaining strength for a 3rd place finish.  Complete results can be found at:  www.SoCalCross.org/results/

It was a great day in the park  and while some took the week off to rest from the double header UCI Kross-Weekend prior, special memories of Velocity Cross were taken by the ones who came out to play.  Don’t miss next week’s event as we promote the Cross-MTB weekend with SCPS Round 4:  LA Cross @ O’Melveny Park.   Not only an intimate park for cyclocross, but also some great trails behind it.  SoCalCross will support IMBA this day creating awareness of our advocacy partner.  The next day head up to Lake Castaic and support CORBA’s Fat Tire Festival complete with lots of MTB activities and cyclocross race!

Race flyer out later today!  Gotta walk the dogs!!!  Nine weeks of 2010 SoCalCross to go!  Hope to see you there!

ABOUT THE PARK:  O’Melveny Park is located above Granada Hills in the San Fernando Valley. The park surrounds the Bee Canyon watershed and abuts the Santa Susana mountain range below Oat Mountain. Hiking trails and fire roads invite exploration of this 672-acre park. Ouside of Griffith Park, O’Melveny Park is the city’s second largest park. Originally known as the “C.J. Ranch”, it was purchased in 1941 by attorney John O’Melveny of the respected large law firm O’Melveny and Meyers and used to grow citrus and graze cattle. Trails: The River Trail from the parking lot to the north park boundary is 2.1 miles, the trail continues for several more miles outside the park boundary but is not maintained. To the west of the Nature Trail after entering the park is another trail that leads up to Mission Point.

Directions: Take the 118/Ronald Reagan Freeway and exit Balboa Blvd. Turn north, driving 2 miles to Sesnon, turn left going west .6 mile, turn right at park entrance.

Address: 17300 Sesnon Blvd., Granada Hills
